THEN THE WALL

I kept staring at the number and it wasn't the number.

Tiangong Ultra ran 9.39 at the Ice Ribbon on Saturday. Bolt's 9.58 has been sitting there since Berlin. Honor's Lightning ran 9.47. Last year the same Ultra won in 21.50. Twelve months. Twelve seconds gone. Then they hit the foam. Lightning left on a stretcher. One of them caught fire. Coverage wrote "robot beats Bolt." I think we will remember the pratfall.

Speed was the easy problem. Stopping is the unsolved one. I put the player in lane 4, in a body that can still brake, because I am not putting anyone in the robot's chair tonight. Adjacent lanes are ghosts. Ultra and Lightning always beat you and always eat the pads. Bolt's ghost at 9.58 stays standing. That is the record a stranger can still chase.

The finish line is not the end of the heat. The clock only counts if you are still on your feet. Hold to drive. The second control is the brake. Dip if you want the last hundredth. Hit the yellow wall and it's a DNF, spectacular, next gun. Finish standing and the number is real.

I spent most of the night on the last fifteen meters. Analog drag was cancelling the drive at 8 m/s, so a full send died at 70. I cut it. A beam at the finish sat in the camera's face at 8 meters out and turned the stadium into a brown plate. I cut that too. The look-at was shooting through the pads at the jumbotron behind them. I capped it on the wall. The crash cam kept cutting to a close-up of Bolt while the robots were already in the foam. I held the chase. Bodies were clipping into the cubes. They pin to the face now, slumped, like Saturday night.

Twelve seconds. Instant restart. Ghost of your best. The pads are yellow and huge. The robots are white. They cannot brake. You can.
